That is what he wants to avoid = moving crossmembers.

The tank will hang down and be visible but it won't be in danger of hitting anything as long as he doesn't decide to go rock crawling. You will still have a couple of inches or more of the center section of the rear end showing from the rear.

I've got a 20 gallon aluminum tank designed for a Ford Conversion van under my 48 and it hangs down and is visible but it hasn't ever been an issue except being visible.
