Thanks for the replies about the oil drainback. It came to mind because of my Audi that has a little depressed area at the oil fill. I suppose they thought it would act as a mini funnel and keep the engine from getting spilled oil on it. However, it accumulates dust and grit that you have to wipe off or risk running into your engine with the oil.
