Rian, I am in charge of putting up a lot of metal buildings. Your original screws look to be the right type for putting metal sheets onto a wood structure.

I your last picture above, the left screw with the odd threads is for wood framing, the one on the right is typical of metal sheet onto metal framing.

Even most of the crews that I have worked with will pre drill the sheets with a small hole, 1/8" diameter (3mm), in the sheets before installing them with the screws. Saves effort and keeps from blunting the screw tips. Looks like your original screws where a poor quality to blunt that quickly.
