My longbed has the original type carb and it pretty much draws the vacum advance for all it's got at idle.
I too have a basic timing light and instead of upgrading the light I just bought a Mr. Gasket degreed balancer tape form my local O'Reilly auto parts. It has been on there for a while now and seems to be staying put and it made dialing in the timing a breeze. I think I paid like 12 bucks for it.
