I wouldn't doubt that it could work, but I'd be concerned on how thin that metal has gotten.

My tank looked just fine from the outside, but sitting pretty much empty for about 20 years allowed the tank to rust away from the inside out.

A new tank is not prohibitively expensive and then you're starting off with a fresh, clean system
