What i have seen done is a Rectangular (Say 1/4" Or Less ) Piece of Steel with a Hole drilled in it and then Tapped to the size screw you need, Then Drill holes to the Outside
of were your square hole was, position the plate from behind (you could use a Bolt to hold it in the center, Then Mig weld the holes plug welding the plate in place.
Just something i have seen that was used in a situation like yours!
Might also be able to put a Rivet Nut in its place also?
