Sounds like your friend had other issues. Was it not vented correctly? My fill spout comes up inside the back of the Suburban. Myself nor none of my passengers has ever commented on selling fumes. I do have the tank vented under the floor tho. By these same principles these AD trucks came with gas behind the bench seat. Anywhere would have to be better than that location (if you can help it).
