Nice! I had basically the same concern with the rake on Dons kit... I raised all three mounts up an inch, and took an inch out of the frame. I started with the larger longbed frame though so I had some room to spare.
I just drilled new holes in the mounts in additional to the original ones, so that the conventional mounting is still possible. I like the L bracket you did.
