Agreed.
They have been heated. Once an individual coil touchs an adjacent coil it no longer has any "spring rate".
I'd go ahead and try the spacers but I am betting it will ride very rough though. Once you put in the spacer you will only have 1 wrap of coil acting as the entire spring, all the other wraps of coils are already collapsed.
