If I were swapping an L6 truck to small block I would keep it in the 6 cylinder position. That should give a better weight balance to the truck and also allow for a shorter driveshaft if going one piece.

On top of that it is a lot less work than removing rivets and finding donor parts. As mentioned above, it would appear different than a factory optioned V8 truck.
