Totally disagree.
Cutting springs can be done, and is done sucessfully all the time.

Don't use a torch. Use a cut-off wheel in a die grinder. That keeps the spring cool. Even in the old days springs were cut with a torch, while the spring was in a bucket of water.
A good formula is:

1/2 coil removed = 1" of drop.

What bad things have you seen with cut springs?
