Like geezer#99 said no need for bypass, I ran my last engine like that for years.
kwmech has good advice to get rid of the rubber cap, they tend to crack and leak very quickly. If you can heat that fitting just enough to break it loose, a plug will look better and last longer, it’s worth it for the peace of mind.
