In this instance I do believe they intended for a square clip to fit in a round hole . I gave a grille the same as yours to my neighbor he has it on his garage wall , I'll get some pictures of it tomorrow . I'm pretty sure your going to have to take the corners off your square clips to fit tightly into the round holes of the grille and then tighten the screws to expand the clips .

I solved the problem, found out it was easier to cut the tips off the back side, grind it smooth on the back side, put it in the grill use the screw thru it into one of the old style c clips. It tightens up nice and looks good.
