lol, bought my '02 GMC new off the lot and the only appearance feature I didn't like was the monstrous plastic grill and oversized emblem..
cut it out for billet grill before the license plates came in the mail..
OP, I like your idea [even though not my style but who cares
] and I think it will look great if you can manage to fit it in there cleanly, maybe work some extra sheet metal around those lines..
I doubt you'll have much success modifying the plastic or even replacing the logo to anything near as sharp as it looks as originally molded in plasti-chrome..
if you're going to replace the logo anyways, might try your hand a fabbing a metal grill in the design of the late model that will accept a fabbed early font metal emblem..
