cs144 upgrade

Ihavea painless wiringkit 10206 i have had in my truck for two years witha cs10 alt. I connected it the way it said to in the instructions on page 7.2 with a 276-1661 diode from radio shack to prevent feedback.

It has worked great for years this way.

Im in middle of a frame off now. I did the headlight relay mod, and also want to do a cs144 alt to compensate for the mark 8 fan im gonna run, along with possible stereo, winch, what not.

Few questions i have after searching for 3 hours.

1) what year make and model am i looking for a alternator our of?

2) will it bolt up to my bracket with just shimming and tweaking?

3) what wiring do i do for my wiring harness?

4) willmy v belt pulley press on in place of the serpentine one?

Thanksin advance

Re: cs144 upgrade

I can provide a harness adapter and a 4ga charging supply cable with soldered lugs if interested. Also, you'll need about 1" more travel out of your heim end bracket and you'll have no problem. Best place to buy an alternator is on Rockauto-look for one from a 1994 Impala SS and look for the Remy new one....it was $94 with no core the last time I bought one about 2 weeks ago for a local customers charging system upgrade.

Oh and yes the pulleys will swap out-its a 7/8" nut-I would suggest using an impact wrench to remove/swap pulleys.

Re: cs144 upgrade

Check out this thread. It details the conversion for the SI and CS alternators and there is a link to the CS 144 on post 27.

Re: cs144 upgrade

Thanks guys. Still alittle confused. I seen some people running the impala alt and some running like a 5.3 ls alt, is there any advantage over another

Re: cs144 upgrade

For your particular application, I'd say the Impala style 6" cased alternator would be your best option. They are incredibly stout at maintaining system voltage. I'd vote for a genuine Delco Remy alternator over a remanufactured parts store one.
