Dual exhaust

Turned out in front of wheels?
Turned out behind wheels?
Straight back under bumper?

PO cut the exhaust pipe at the last hangers. It looks like they used to turn out behind the back wheels. My neighbor owns and exhaust shop. He said he would hook me up. Just need to decide on how I want to route them?

Re: Dual exhaust

They are nice straight out the back. Lmc has a new rear bumper that has cutouts for dual exhaust makes it look good.

Re: Dual exhaust

I've got an 80's step bumper on the back of mine. I was leaning towards taking them out the back but with no chrome tips and was thinking I would have them stop just under bumper and not protrude past bumper. I was also thinking I would have them a little wider than what OregonNed's are. Not all the way out to quarters....but a little wider.

I was also thinking about putting my spare back underneath my bed....

I'm a big fan of you your tail pipes are done, my daily driver is pretty much the same, pipes hidden underneath and just the last 1/2" of a turn down tip showing, nice and clean and next to nothing of a rusty pipe or rusty chrome tip showing, lets face it chrome tips and new exhaust pipe look good new but 2-5 years later there an eye sore.

Re: Dual exhaust

Turning them out in front of the rear wheels will create a lot of cab noise, and dumping them under the truck befor axle usually creates a lot of drone at highway speeds. I am a fan of going straight out the rear, or at the minimum turned out after the axle (although I'm not a huge fan of that look).

I had flowmasters on my '69, and it wasn't bad at all in the cab.

I have flowmasters now and with them cut under the bed....I get the drowne at highway speeds you speak of. i didn't know if it would be any better turned out the side. Can pipes be routed out the back and still fit a spare underneath?

I concur with Swamp Rat about the chrome tips looking ragged after a few years. Don't know if I like the slight turn down tip or just straight pipe tip. Hmmm

Absolutely. Mount up your spare and have the shop work the pipes around it. Turned down or straight is a matter of preference, but either way Id take it back as far as I could to minimize cab noise and drone, which Flowmasters are famous for.

Re: Dual exhaust

i've got flowmasters and quite a bit of lobe so the exhaust is pretty throaty. it looks like the exhaust used to turn out behind the rear wheels and the PO just cut it right at the hangers. since this is a fee.99 hook up.....i think i'm just going to ask him to make new hangers, route the pipes around spare and go straight out right under the bumper and just cut the pipes straight, even with the back of the bumper. no tips just the pipe.

Re: Dual exhaust

I like straight out the back as well.

Although I saw one the other day with stainless pipes bent at 45 degrees or so comming out behind the rear wheel and the end cut at 45 degrees to be flush with the side of the truck...looked pretty nice.

NO, to turn out in front of wheels: look like somebody ran out of $.

??, to turn out behind wheels: tires will kick up road tar and mud on them.

YES, to straight out back--even w/bumper, just past bumper, just before bumper w/ends bent down slightly. IMO, one of these 'outbacks' would look the best all around.

Straight out the back is out of style, turn them down behind the bumper.

Not knocking the turning down behind bumper....But "Out of Style"??? LOL It's a 44 year old truck. Styles come and go but the truck stays around.

Re: Dual exhaust

mine come out in front of the rear tires. I think it would be ok if I was 16 or if I had an X pipe to kill the slight rattley sound of the turbo mufflers. I wish I had gone out the back or gotten better mufflers and an X pipe

Re: Dual exhaust

I have true duals from headers back with Flowmaster mufflers. No H or X pipe or anything. It looks like the PO just took a hacksaw to the pipe just behind the hangers. I assume the tail pipes used to turn out under quarter panels behind the rear wheels and the PO didn't like the look so hacked them off.

I think I'm going to have tail pipes welded on with new hangers and take it straight out the back, no tips, no turn downs...just straight tail pipes stopping even with the back of the bumper.

Should I have them put a cross pipe in to make an H upstream of the mufflers????

Re: Dual exhaust

I'm re-doing mine like this (see my diagram) and with these basic components starting with block hugger headers so I can still get great ground clearance while running dual 3" exhaust.

Re: Dual exhaust

I don't have a photo but the pipes exit behind the rear wheels, but are turned down and tucked up under the bed so you can't see them.

Mike, I didn't know you were so style conscience.

Myself, I like them out the back but angled out so the pipe comes out at the ends/corners of the bumper. I also like to tuck the pipes up so they are only visible right at the end.
