Post dumb question- how to install radio?

Yes, it sounds like a dumb question, but dang , I'm new to the truck world and I can't figure it out. I bought a 71 truck radio for my 72 Cheyenne. I just can't figure out how to install it. If I go from the rear, the radio knob stems don't stick out far enough to fasten the nuts to attach it to the panel. On top of all this, there's not much space to work with with all those vent hoses in the way. Any suggestions?

You wiil probably have to remove the vent ducts to install it. Not sure that I understand why you can't get the nuts on the stems though. They should be long enough.

The factory radios attach to the dash holes with some little funny cupped washer things. If you tried to use regular washers it would make the shaft too short to put the knobs on. Do you have these parts? If not put a request on the parts board and I am sure someone will sell you a set.

I've put a few radios in mine over the years. Each time I've had to at least move the heater controls out of the way.

Just finished putting mine in.

I moved the heater controls and removed the ashtray assembly, gave me plenty of room:

Remove 2 screws holding heater controls in, unplug switch and move to right side.

Remove ash tray and bracket inside of dash (4 screws access from bottom.

The radio should bolt to the speaker, if the speaker bracket is not already in the truck put the speaker up in the dash first, (leave the bolt out of the back of the radio that bolts to the speaker) After you have the speaker up in (most are not bolted so you may have to hold it) Slide the radio up in, be careful of the heater duct hose.

Plug the radio in

Put the recessed washers in from the front of the dash, add the nuts to the front, reassemble everything else.

Good Luck, clean and lube those heater controls while you have them out.

BTW I had a hard time finding those recessed cups, bought a set off a board member here and I also bought a junker radio that has them on it. If you can't find them, let me know I may part with the extra set.

Do you have a set of orig. knobs?
