Buying a new Air Compressor

I am biting the bullet and going to get a new air compressor. I currently have a small 2hp 20 gallon tank. Can't keep up with much...

I leaning towards this...

Any thoughts negative or positive.

Thank you for any feedback.

Re: Buying a new Air Compressor

Should do ok. If you ever decide to run a blaster or paint with it etc... it should cover it. I have a IR I bought from northern about 5 years ago and love it. The specs are about identical to this one and the only reason for the IR was free shipping! I dont have anything to challenge it yet but hope to get a blast cabinet soon.

Re: Buying a new Air Compressor

Thank you for the comments. I am trying to get the right compressor so I can paint. From what I have been reading I need a minimum of 80 Gallon 5HP.

Re: Buying a new Air Compressor

I have a single stage 3 piston 18cfm from these guys, http://www.eatoncompressor.com/ made in USA if you care about that sort of thing.

I've had it for probably 7 years with no issues. I'm happy with it but if I had to do it again, I'd get a two stage. I use if for air sanders, die grinders, and even painted a few things with it. I've never out run it but it's hard to buy an air compressor that's too big.

Re: Buying a new Air Compressor

Check the motor specs and pump RPM. 5HP is pretty meaningless when it comes to compressors. Compare CFM @ some PSI. The 5HP Baldor motor on mine is rated at 23A @ 230V.

You might troll CL for a while to see if you can't find a quality used compressor for less money. For example: http://dallas.craigslist.org/ftw/tls/2130903454.html

Its kind of a funny example since its duplex but I'd guess its an expensive compressor if bought new.

Re: Buying a new Air Compressor

HP and size aren't as important as CFM as 72 mentioned. I believe that sand blasting requires 11 CFM at 90 PSI, not sure about paint but I think a good HVLP gun has a lower CFM requirement, but for solid passes you would need a larger reservoir ie, the 80 gal. my 0.02!

I did some research on Eaton and spoke with them today. Great people over there and apparently great product. I have decided to go with this one.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Re: Buying a new Air Compressor

You're definitely buying a hell of a compressor. 19 SCFM will run pretty much anything you'll likely ever need in the future.

Re: Buying a new Air Compressor

I went with the husky set with the air tools (air ratchet, air hammer, impact gun) from home depot years ago and I love it. I have no reasoning to spend any more then that...
