Ls swap in 47.

Hello guys. I'm planning on purchasing a 47 3100 from a friend of mine. He says that it has a camaro front clip on it. I want to put either a 4.8 or 5.3 in it. I have a few questions on ls swaps and what it's going to take. I'm having a hard time finding a complete engine in my area. I have looked and found some basket cases for $300 missing lots of parts. I called a junkyard and they want $1200 no ecu or harness. Would it be wise to buy one off ebay a complete dropout? Another issue the oil pan. Will the truck pan work or do I need to buy the muscle car pan? Thanks for the help and any pointers in my quest.

Welcome to the forum.
I purchased both my engine/trans packages from eBay. I could not find anything like them locally. Both packages came with everything you need; complete engine, trans, front assessory drive,ECM,TCM,harness, and peddle. Truck oil pans work for a lot of swaps but in a 47. I am sure you will have to get the motor mocked up in some way so you can assess everything you will need to install. I am sure others will chime in soon.

Are we talking 47 art deco or 47 advanced design? I think that was a mid year change. I have a 1950 advanced design and I used the truck oil pan with a mustang II front suspension but I think if you swaped to the Camaro clip you will probably have to use the muscle car pan. Since there is so much room upward you could get away with raising the engine but then you have so much fabrication on the firewall and trans tunnel you might as well just buy the musclecar pan. Get the motor and start mocking it up and you will see if you have clearance and then you can order a pan if you need to.

Oh and if you can afford a donor, check craigslist for complete donor trucks. You should be able to find some 2wd 99-02 silverados fairly cheaply now. The longbed work trucks are the cheapest but have the same motor as the nicer trucks. Then you may be able to part out the truck and recoup most if not all your money. Then you also have peace of mind that you have a good motor because you drove it already. Otherwise you might buy a pull out and get junk like I did.

I found a rolled 2004 Sierra 5.3 on CL and paid $900 for it for my Burb build. Downside is you have to disassemble and get rid of what you don't need. The upside is you get many of the parts you need in a cost effective manner.

Good advice on mocking up the engine then selecting a pan.

Thanks for the help. It is the 47 advanced design. I have found an engine l33 for $1500 complete stand alone. I will have to try it with the pan off when I get it and see what it looks like.

CL has the real deals but you have to jump on them fast, car-part.com is a great source for any part you need.

I found a complete lm7 5.3 with 131k 2002. I looked at it yesterday and I heard it run. I paid $750 complete. I think I got a good deal at least I hope. Around here they are kind of scarce and sell very fast. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for the reply. I did in fact hear it run and I got to rev it up. It started very quickly and the truck looked to be in pretty clean shape. It wasn't a ranch truck beat to death without a single straight panel on it. The engine looked fairly clean looks like it could use an oil change that's small stuff. Next to find mounts.
