Moving The Engine Forward!!!??

So I got tired of trying to reach that last header bolt and the lack of room for my H.E.I. on my small block. So after just looking at the beast for an hour, I came up with moving the engine cradle forward. Out came the engine I just put in and I pulled all the bolts out to the cradle and moved it forward a couple inches. No problem so far and this may not work on 2wd. I have to put new drive shafts in anyway because of the 700r4 and crawl box setup. I also had to move the stock shifter linkage. So far quite happy with results. And there is a bunch of room to work near the rear of the engine. I have a serpentine belt system from a 92 engine and electric fans so that was not an issue. Just got the mounts for my 4core radiator built so I can put the new core support in soon and see if all this work is going to fit.

Re: Moving The Engine Forward!!!??

several threads on here already asking about doing exactly what you are doing. (for the reason of putting a 700R4 in a K10). Do you know how much you moved it fwd? Bout 2"?? Also, since you changed the accessory drive sys, is your serpentine setup shallower/deeper than the stock setup? In other words, how tight would things be up front if you'd left the stock belts and pulleys and fan on? I believe there is room, just curious how much spare room there is from the perspective of someone who has just done this. Pics would be great! I'm quite interested on the 700R4 setup on a K10.
Thanks for posting.

Re: Moving The Engine Forward!!!??

I moved it forward til the frame got so narrow it would not go any further. I will measure as the old bolt holes are still there. I bet you have a fan spacer that you could make smaller to account for the movement. I still have to install the radiator support but i measured everything before I did it and I should ave a couple inches still to play with. Not sure how to load pics though (help). Relocating the holes in the frame was interesting. I used a set of needle nose vise grips to find the center of the hole in the cradle and where it landed on the other side was where to drill a hole. Voila! Also had to use a right angle drill from my DEWALT arsenal.

Re: Moving The Engine Forward!!!??

Oh and about your 700r4, 1986 and lower are not good. Later models have better inside parts. I rebuilt one from a junk yard and put all Corvette servos and B&M clutches and a host of other stuff in and for about 500 bucks I was in action. I had to replace the main shaft anyway with a trans dapt unit to fit the 205 t-case. Not that hard really.

great, thanks. Btw, to load pics, click "go advanced" when typing in a reply, and then click on the paper clip symbol and you can browse pics you've saved to your computer. Welcome!

Re: Moving The Engine Forward!!!??

Here's a tip on how to do the pics on Windows 7. (others slightly different)

You can print and follow these steps:

First: pics have to be 100 kilobytes or less. If they're more than that they won't upload so look in the internet for a "resizing" program. I use the one that came from Microsoft. To see if you have it, right click on a picture and look in the drop down box to see if it has "resize pictures." I use the smallest size.

1. After you click on "reply" or "new thread" click on the small paper clip next to the smiley face above the post or go to manage attachements on the bottom.

2. A "Manage Attachments" pop up box will appear. Click on one of the "browse" boxes.

3. The next window says to "Choose file to upload." Look for your picture folder and locate the picture you want to upload. (I keep my truck pics separately in a Truck Folder)

4. Place cursor over the picture or right mouse click the picture and look for the size in KBs. If it's more that 100 KBs right mouse click the picture and resize it or use another resize program you downloaded above.

note: if the KBs are close to 100KB, the upload program "may" resize them for you.

5. Click on the picture you want. The name will appear in the "File name" box on the bottom.

6. Click on "Open".

7. The "Manage attachements" box will appear again with the location and name of the picture on the first box.

8. If you have more pics, click the next "Browse" box, etc... Then click the "Upload" box.

9. After it finishes uploading, close or minimize the "Manage attachments" box.

10. Click on "Preview Post" box on you post to preview it before posting.
