how do you roll down these windows?

another newb question:

here's a truck i'm interested in but i notice there's no window handle.

so, how is it opened?

does the other side have a window crank, if so see if it will work

it looks like the splined shaft the handle goes on was broken off at some point.

it also looks like the door handle maybe put on backwards (im not sure about the early 60's models)

what year is the truck? I'm assuming between 60-63'. I zoomed in a bit on the pic, and it looks like it could have either dropped out of place, or the shaft was broken off with the handle.

it is definatly a hand crank window, the question is what is wrong with the crank/mechanism and it is hard to tell from the pic.

is it just a matter of unscrewing it, flipping it and screwing it back in or could it be more complicated than that?

the handle is not a big deal, it only takes a flat head screwdriver to put it in any orientation you want. i'm not familular enough with the 60-63's to know if that position is correct or not.

Believe it or not, the pass. door handle IS in the correct position for the lock to engage. The way the handle sits is correct, because that keeps the pass. from leaning on teh handle and opening the door.

If you pull the planel and see the action link work the door lock, you will understand. There was a write-up on this back a few months ago.

Another thing with these series of trucks is that AT THE TIME, due to regulation, you were ONLY suppose to enter the vehcle from the sidewalk side and THATs why ONLY the passinger side came equiped with a lock and key.

Strange but true.

You can engage the locking mech by pushing the handle back wards.

I know I'm not describing this 100% correctly so others chime in with a better description if possible.


BTW, I'm putting locks in both doors and will probally have to position the handle the same way to keep the kids and wife from falling out

Back to the window regulator... have you seen the truck yourself?

• Can't tell from the picture but perhaps the window handle just fell off? Is the regulator spline sticking out?
• Any chance somebody installed power windows?
• Did you ask the owner about it?

i'm just spit-ballin here - but I can't imagine the spline breaking off the crank mech - but the picture looks like there is no spline sticking out, and it almost looks like the hole is covered from the inside with something and maybe painted?? It is hard to tell in the pic and I realize you haven't seen it yet. Btw, is there even a window in the truck on that door? If not, am guessing the whole shooting match is gone. When/if you do, if it sounds like there's 5 pounds of metal rolling aournd in the bottom of the door when you open it, the regulator (with the crank mech and spline attached) has probably fallen to the inside of the door. If not, then the whole thing may be missing and the window somehow fixed permanently in place (if there is one). Having said that, I wouldn't NOT buy the truck based on this issue alone, it's probably pretty easy to remedy by a junkyard trip for a window regulator and/or I think a few places carry them. Or a good excuse to get a power window setup - there are several kits to choose from nowadays. I the truck is what you're looking for - probably still worth a trip to see it in person if nearby - or ping the owner til he explains the weirdness of this picture. Gotta be a simple answer. (I've heard that before)

Chimney- that just means that you have to lock and unlock the drivers door using the inside handle and cant unlock it from the outside

as Jocko stated, it really isn't a big deal whatever shape the window assembly is in because all the parts are easy to locate and fairly inexpensive.

ok cool, so i can lock both doors when i park it but i have to enter from the passenger side with the key, correct?

yes, you could always switch out the handle with a keyed one if you dont like having to get in the passengers door

the inside handles are just rotated down to a stop, which locks the door.

The door in the picture is 60-63. For the window, it just looks like the handle is missing or the shaft broke off. If the complete regulator had fallen down in the door, the window would not stay in the up position.

Now, I know that the 65 truck that I have ONLY had a exterior handle with a keyed lock on the DRIVER side from the factory. The inside door handle would be pointing forward and to lock the door from the inside (for both driver and passenger doors) you would puch the handle down. To open the door, you would lift the handle up. Is the 60-63 different?

interesting thread. regarding the ability to lock the door from the inside - my truck's door handle goes that "extra little bit of rotation" but for the life of me, it's never locked diddly squat. As for position - I take my windo cranks off and put them where they don't hit my knee and aren't easily accidentally actuated. In my case, that means pointing forward and slightly up about 10-20 degrees. But that's just me. Concur the window would not stay up if the regulator were missing - that's why I was curious if there was even a window in the truck (since it can't be seen in the pic - and chimney hasn't seen it in person yet).. Who knows!! I'd love to figure out what I'm missing on the interior locking thingy with the door handle - I'm no rocket scientist but no moron either (ok, hold your replies to that comment...) Seems odd my doors won't lock from inside - I MUST be a moron.

60-63 was different becasue it seem to be reversed. I would love to find the article I think it was ion Jolly 60-66 BB at yahoo. I'll search for it and try to post it.

OK, not to hijack the thread further, but my next project are my "door locks". I have been told that if you pull the handle back, that it's locked. My truck does not have door keys, so I've never used the door lock.

But if I can lock my doors from inside with the handle, than what does the button do?

I would try this myself, but my truck is at home.

If I remember correctly the inside lock will unlock when you shut the door. Then the key lock on the outside locks the truck from the outside. If I am right you are unable to lock your keys in the truck which is nice.
