6.0L fuel problem?

I've got a walbro universal 255 inline fuel pump on my 6.0L LS with a Russell inline fuel filter (40 micron element). When it's idling its fine when I rap it a couple times and go above about 3,000 rpm it falls on its nose and if I don't back off the throttle, it will die. I'm wondering if the filter before the pump could be restricting it as demand increases or the pump is at fault? When it's idling I hear the pump whine, but when this occurs it gets quiet, haven't had any help yet so I can see if its loosing prime or actual power to the pump. Just wanted to see if anyone else has had an experience with a set up like this.

maybe set up a mechanical fuel pressure gauge? you got any logged data? you should see the fuel trims going crazy as it leans out if youre running out of gas.

Re: 6.0L fuel problem?

No I don't have any logged data, I'm just getting it going. I was curious if anyone may have issues with the filter maybe restricting the supply to the pump?

Thanks, Wade

Re: 6.0L fuel problem?

I run an external walbro255 with a large trick flow prefilter and the Vette post filter/reg and haven't had any fuel starvation issues. Take the prefilter out of the fuel line setup and run w/o to see if it makes a difference.

Re: 6.0L fuel problem?

Do you know what micron your trick flow pre filter is? That's the plan for Monday. Thanks to all for the responses

Re: 6.0L fuel problem?

I forgot to mention I have the return style fuel rail also. May even be a pressure regulator too (it is brand new).

Re: 6.0L fuel problem?

Pre filter should be around 100 micron, 40 could be too restrictive.

Re: 6.0L fuel problem?

Thank you for the responses, that'll be the first thing I try Monday. Second will be making sure there's no weird thing going on with fuel pump power. Then will go from there.

Re: 6.0L fuel problem?

No prefilter, 255s are cheap and usually don't die from sucking up crap....the usually die from sucking through a restriction.
