NP243 electronic shift in a 72?

I have searched the crud out of this question and I cannot seem to come up with an answer. I have a 72 K20 and I have been looking at the option of powering it with a Vortec 4wd drivetrain from a 97. It's a 305 Vortec engine a 4L60E and I assume an NP243. The donor truck is somewhat loaded and has a push button 4wd shift. Board members are telling me that to line up the location for my shifter after adapting my NP205, I'll have to move the engine forward, due to the length difference from my TH350 to the 4L60E. My question: Can I put the entire drivetrain from the 97 in, patch up the hole from the floor shifter and not have to worry about moving the location of my engine?

Re: NP243 electronic shift in a 72?

The biggest issue I see is that with the transfer case from the '97, which should be a NP241, it is a drivers side drop. Your '72 K20 will need a passenger side drop. I think I would just use the NP205 with the engine in it's original location, modify the shifter as needed and shorten and lengthen driveshafts to fit.
