Diesel was run in a '66 Chevy C10...what now?

I'm about to start the process of fixing up a 1966 Chevy C10 truck that had a tank of diesel filled in it. It died in a ball of smoke and was parked 10 years ago when it was parked and has sat since then. The engine block is coated in black sludge. I'm curious to know what the possibility is for rebuilding the 283 V8 that's in it. Does this sort of thing cause damage that requires an engine rebuild or can this be cleaned out without open heart surgery?

Thanks

Re: Diesel was run in a '66 Chevy C10...what now?

We had one on the farm where I worked the guy put diesel in the gastank, We took the tank off drained and washed out with gas, blowed the gas line out with air, pulled the carb and dumped the diesel out, pulled the spark plugs, put gas in each cylinder, cranked it over blowing gas and diesel out of the cylinders, it took a while, but it finally started running good, I would definately put new plugs in it. As for sitting for 10 years, that shouldn't affect it as diesel has an oil base. Someone else may have more knowledge of one sitting 10 years, but the one we done was like a week later when we cleaned it up.

Cool! I'm having it transported this week, and I'll start working on it next weekend. It sounds like a relatively straight-forward job. Thanks!

sitting for so long the carb may also need a rebuild. mine was a mess with only old gas sitting for a couple years.

I'll spray some carb cleaner in it and see how it goes. I'm planning on replacing the carb and intake soon, anyways. I don't have much use for a 2bbl carb
