Sitting on Bump Stops

I dropped the front end of my '85 with springs (got them used, supposed to be 3" drop) and spindles (2.5") and I notice that it now sits on the lower a-arms bump stops. I know that the spindles don't effect the geometry, but I could have sworn that the old setup had more than 3" of travel before the bump stop. Is something really out of whack here?

The a-arms are brand new replacements from LMC, and they came with the bump stops already installed. I don't remember the old bump stops being quite as tall, these are like 4" tall. Could that be my problem?

Re: Sitting on Bump Stops

I just pulled the bump stop out completely you can also buy shorter ones or trim your current ones down

Re: Sitting on Bump Stops

all i did was cut off the bracket completely, but my front end is going to be bagged, you can try it, and then buy an adjustable screw in bumpstop.

Re: Sitting on Bump Stops

Removing them or installing shorter ones will keep contact @ that point from occurring. That being said, it can also open a can of worms.... How tall are your front tires? Pulling the stops out w/anything more than a 27" tall tire w/factory wheel tubs & the tires will be buzzing the upper portion of the inner wells.

So the trade-off is which is the worse scenario for you? For me, I prefer the bump-stop to limit the suspension travel so the tire isn't getting slammed into the front sheet-metal clip. Constant pounding will sooner or later screw w/all your body panel alignment.

Building a small, high rpm engine with the perfect bore, stroke and rod ratio is very impressive.

Cubic inches is like Indiana Jones with a cheap pistol.

Re: Sitting on Bump Stops

I took the rubber bump stops off but my tire hit the inner fenders only on big dips

Re: Sitting on Bump Stops

Scoti is correct with his assessment. I might add that this is one more point of record to why I do not recommend 3" springs for these trucks. If it were me, I would go with a 2" spring and see where it puts you.
