What is this?

I have what appears to be a control modual on the passengers Side mounted above the air control box. It has plug with a blue, yellow, pink, green, white, black and brown wire running to it. It runs to the firewall where it has been hacked to pieces. All that run out the other side in the engine bay are three orange wires. One wire runs to the dizzy, one wire runs to the starter and the last wire is grounded on the firewall.

What is this thing and do I need it? The truck runs the same with or without the wires plugged into the modual in the dash.

it's the engine knock controller. there's a sensor on the side of the block that sends a signal to the controller which retards the timing when/if you start pinging.... you can indeed run without it.

Re: What is this?

Is there any benefit to running with it? I assumed the other orange wire ran to the starter but on further inspection there is what looks to be a sensor why down by the crank just in front of the sensor. I can't see it doing much good since it looks like most of the wires have been butchered or will it still function with only 3 wires attached? One to the distributor one to the sensor and the last wire as a ground.

if it works correctly, sure it may benefit you at some point...towing, high altitude, low octane fuel, etc... they put it there to prevent detonation, and detonation is bad.

as far as your wiring....youre gonna need a wiring diagram in order to make sure everything is still connected properly. good luck

Re: What is this?

Think I'll just disconnect the remaining wires since it looks like 85% of the wires lead nowhere. I have a real simple engine setup, 350 with a carb and manual choke. Most of the 84 ectronics, pollution control stuff went bye bye long before I ever had the truck.
