700r4 Spitting fluid out of the dipstick

This problem just started after a few weeks of running fine. I trolled the forum and found 2 options, vent tube is clogged or dipstick is wrong. As the dipstick worked for a few weeks, I am thinking the vent tube. What I can't find anywhere is WHERE the french toast this vent tube is!!!
Help with a picture would be awesome, we are unable to drive a beautiful truck otherwise...

Re: 700r4 Spitting fluid out of the dipstick

I don't know for sure what causes the fluid to go up the dipstick but when I had my 700R4 rebuilt the rebuilder put a locking dipstick on the trany.I think it's a common problem.

I am gonna give that a go. We bought one that was a knock off of the Lokar one. You get what you pay for. Still want to check that air vent...

Re: 700r4 Spitting fluid out of the dipstick

Over heating of the transmission will cause fluid to be push out the dipstick tube. A clogged vent tube could do this too. You best option to find the vent tube is to google a picture of it.

it is on top of trans and is about 1 1/2 inches long . very small vent tube just before the trans converter area

Best way to see if it is clogged is to blow air thru it. Low PSI though.

Other things that can make a tranny suddenly overheat would also be suspect. This includes such things as clogged tranny cooler lines, fried clutch discs, locked up brake, clogged filter, trying to force a dry u-joint or rear end to turn, and continuing to use fluid that has overheated once instead of flushing it. That's not a complete list, but check for those conditions.

All those are very true facts. My comment on the vent tube causing it to push fluid out wasn't meant as causing it to over heat, more as that it won't let the transmission vent properly causing it to find another place to, ie distick tube. I should have stated it that way.

I'm kind of leaning towards the overheating too. What rear end ratio are you running with it... And rear tire size.

Re: 700r4 Spitting fluid out of the dipstick

Kid wanted to drive it to a high school meeting, so we ghetto rigged it with zip ties holding the dipstick in place. I sent him packing with absorbent material(in case it leaked) and fluid (in case it leaked) He drove it maybe 10 miles there and back. No issues, no power loss, no gear problems. I am going to say that we got what we paid for with a cheap knock off plastic dip stick. New one on order. Fingers crossed.

Re: 700r4 Spitting fluid out of the dipstick

My 4L60E (a more modern version of the 700) would do this road racing, which leads me to support the overheating argument. Or blocked vent tube.

Re: 700r4 Spitting fluid out of the dipstick

My TH400 has been doing this off and on since I swapped engine's and no longer run a direct drive fan. Engine doesn't support it. Normally it does it on hot day's when I run it hard. Don't drive it much yet, but I will be putting in a larger CFM running fan when I do the 700r4 swap.

Good luck getting this figured out.

Re: 700r4 Spitting fluid out of the dipstick

I could almost buy in to the overheating issue. But the only time it spit on me was pulling forward out of the drive, backing up and then pulling back in. Total on time would be less than 3 minutes? The vent would be plausible as I don't see a tube coming out where the vent is supposed to be. Hard to get in there with it on the ground. I just drove it about 5 miles from the house to the office to show these guys the finished product and had no issues. It did have trouble if I let off the gas in 3rd, sort of had a hard time deciding which gear it wanted. No problems when it was shifting though...might have to bite the bullet and seek help from someone more qualified than I (so just about anyone)
