Rear End / Axle Options

The 1939 truck I just bought, which isn't even here yet, is already snowballing. Apparently when they went to put it on the trailer they realized the rear end had locked up since it's been sitting. Though it could also be one or both rear brakes, I'm not sure.

Supposing it is the rear end, what are my options to replace it? This whole project is "supposed" to be done on a shoestring budget. As I understand it there are lots of interchangeable parts that can be used on these old trucks, everything from other year trucks to muscle cars I'm thinking, and I'd like to keep my eye open for something used that will work.

I actually restore cars for a living... Volkswagens. They don't really have rear ends, of course, so I'm honestly pretty ignorant about them.

I'm pretty upset and feel I'm due some small refund, as he specifically told me the truck was rolling, but that's a different issue.

Thanks.

Dan

Re: Rear End / Axle Options

On Craigslist in my area I see available complete rear ends for:

'55 "Chevy"

'95 S10

'80 C10

'96 1/2 Ton Tahoe

Thanks again.

Re: Rear End / Axle Options

By the way, I realize the thought of this may be ridiculous. I just need some guidance.

Are there ways to "unfreeze" a rear axle?

Thanks.

Re: Rear End / Axle Options

I talked to the truck driver and he seemed to think there was a good chance it was the rear brakes, rather than the differential. That would be good news, though still is no picnic.

Truck should be here Tuesday.
