tinting the big back window?

The glass shop called today and said they can't get the window tint to work on the curved rear big window. Has any one had problems with their window tinting? Thanks Rich

Re: tinting the big back window?

In 2000 we were headed for Colorado. My buddy was in his Cameo pulling a teardrop trailer. I could see him in my rearview mirror even in traffic a 1/2 mile back as he was rear lit by the reflection off the teardrop.

We stopped in Amboy, CA. (in the Mohave desert) it was 125* He was melting and said his a/c couldn't keep up.

When we got to Williams, AZ a couple of days later he was becoming a real redneck literally. So I found a glass shop in Flagstaff that tinted windows. So the next morning we dropped the Cameo of and went to breakfast . An hour and a half later it was done.

Not only done but done in one piece with out removing the window.

The secret, while laying the tint out on the outside of the glass a trimming to size he then used a heat gun to help the tint to form to the glass.

Then he installed it on the inside and used the heat gun on the outside of the glass to help the tint to conform to the glass.

It came out perfect with no wrinkles, bubbles or relief cuts.

On the rest of the trip my buddies redneck faded and the a/c worked great.

BTW the indian kid who did the job was no longer there a few years later and the shop is now closed.

Re: tinting the big back window?

. Yes , just as described. Wet the outer glass, set the film with the clear tear off outward so the film portion is against the glass. Rough trim the piece close to size. Take a heat gun and gently apply heat across the not flat surface. You will start to see tree branches or veins, keep going and use a squeegy to lighly smooth them out. Once you have it going the direction you want, let it cool and remove it. You will now wet the inner window, peel the outer clear protector from the film and apply the surface that was just touching the clear prtector to the inner glass. Remember lots of water/soap solution you bcant get it wet enough and a window tinter has never drowned while working. Water a steady hand a new razor blades are your freinds

Re: tinting the big back window?

to add to g&r's reply...
i had the rear window tinted to match the one piece side windows from brothers,
the guy had no problem fitting it without a wrinkle and then we went on a 3500 mile trip and burned up with ac on high the whole time.
next year i added a second layer over that. doesn't look near as good as the first layer.
next spring i'm having both layers removed and limo tint applied.
moral of the story... go dark

1 layer

2 layers

Re: tinting the big back window?

I tint windows for a living and any experienced tinter should be able to do that rear window now they may not want to especially if it is the original gasket and every tinter does things a little different I personaly won't soak a rubber set window with water a lite mist works great for me

Yeah, but it kinda negates the whole purpose of a "BIG" window, doesn't it?

Re: tinting the big back window?

Ogre what is limo tint?
Went to the glass co. He said he had been doing tinting for 15 years and wouldn't even look at the copies of this. I guess in 15 years he hasn't learned anything. It doesn't surprise me though. They put in my front windshield and have to redo it . The chrome is not laying in the rubber right. Lucky I haven't paid them anything yet.
I might try to tint it myself. All of the rubber is new.
I do appreciate all the help. I did call 2 other glass shops and they didn't want to try to tint the window.

Nope ! You can still see through it, without the sunburn.

Driving my GMC "Cameo" one winter afternoon with the sun behind me I felt this burning sensation on my back that I never felt while driving my Chevy step side small window.

The GMC will be getting limo tint when I get to that project .

tint level is based on what percent of light shine thru it.
50, 35, 20 and 5 are typical levels, 50 let's 50% of light thru, 20 is 20% light thru.
i used 35 on my first layer and second layer and it works great.
i will probably use 20 or 5 depending on what i see thru samples.
limo tint is 5, it blocks 95% of light.

Re: tinting the big back window?

You may just want to wait until you drop down to Phoenix or another hot area place where the glass tint guys may know their business a bit better. In those areas it isn't about looks as much as it is keeping the sun off your neck and they have been doing it for years. Within five miles of where I am sitting in Yakima there are a half dozen shops that co uld do a perfect job of it but that's a long way away.

Find a real tint shop and be suspect of anything the current shop tells you. Anyone who thinks they know everything and can't take the time to at least listen to the customer knows nothing in my opinion.

You used the term 'glass company'. I would go to a place that specializes in window tinting. I live in Florida and it is almost a requirement to have tint. So there are lots of shops that are good. Hopefully you can find one near you.

It is worth a shot doing it yourself. You can always peel it off if you mess up and the film is relatively cheap. But therebis an art to it on more unique windows. Just like anything else, practice makes perfect.

Re: tinting the big back window?

I was gonna say you need a tint shop not a glass shop and most glass shops I know now days couldn't even put in a rubber set window with the chrome trim
