Flywheel question
I've done some searching on the board, and I'm not able to come up with the answer I need. My truck had a 327 in it, and I'm swapping in a 350 from a '91 Blazer. When it comes to the flywheel, could I use my existing flywheel or do I need to buy a new one. From what I've read, the '91 would be an externally balanced block and if that's the case, then I need a weighted flywheel. Also, would I need to take it to a machine shop and have them balance this thing for me?

Re: Flywheel question
I have been researching that also, generally, what I have found is that if you are taking it off a motor with a 2 piece rear main seal and putting it on another one, it should work. They changed the rear main seal to one piece in the late 80's?

Re: Flywheel question
It uses a different flywheel. Anything with a 1 piece rear main takes a different flywheel than the older 2 piece rear main seal blocks. You need to use the flywheel for the 91 engine.

Re: Flywheel question
Thank you for the responses. So, would I need to do anything special with the '91 flywheel, or should it bolt right up without needing to do anything to it (such as have it balanced to this engine)?

Re: Flywheel question
Just use the flywheel that comes with the motor, no rebalancing would be needed since it's already for that motor.
By flywheel, I'm guessing that it's a manual. If so, make sure the 91 flywheel will take the same size clutch and pressure plate as was previously in your truck.

Re: Flywheel question
The Blazer that the engine came out of was an automatic, and my truck is a manual. This is why I'm trying to find out what I'm going to need to do to bolt a flywheel on this engine.

Re: Flywheel question
You will need a flywheel for a '86-'02 Gen I 305 or 350. There are 2 sizes of flywheels. There is the 12 3/4" with 153 teeth and the 14" with 168 teeth. You will need the correct one for the starter you will be using. You will also need to make sure it will accept the size of clutch you plan to run.

Re: Flywheel question
So I don't really need to worry about dealing with the balance right? Thank you for the information!

Re: Flywheel question
No, not unless you are building a 383 with a one piece rear main seal. All stock '86-'02 Gen I small blocks (305 or 350) with the one piece rear main seal use the same flywheel.

Re: Flywheel question
Ok, so I thought I was ready to order but there are too many options. :-).
I need to order the flywheel, clutch and throw out bearing. Again, it's a '91 engine mated up to the '69 SM465. I want to make sure everything will work together. What am I looking for? Will a 168 tooth flywheel work? What about the starter? Anything I need to worry about there? Any pointers would be greatly appreciated! |

Re: Flywheel question
Oh, and I am planning on sticking with my mechanical linkage if that matters.
