Factory 1950 Frame
I am new to the forum and also to these trucks. But I am helping with a 1950 S10 frame swap and the guy gave me the old factory frame. My question is it it worth keeping this frame and boxing it in and putting a body and a LS motor in it. I know I would have to change the Trans, rear end and susp. But I was just wondering about the frame. Thanks

These frames have been done up with big or hot engines for the past 60 years without problems. I've got a couple of friends who run blower motors in them. With that Corvette parts yard in Picayune you should have access to some strong running LS engines if you want to go with a hot one and even the pieces to put Corvette suspension under it if that spins your wheels, That would require kits to do though.
Guys choose to use the S-10 chassis instead for various reasons some sound and some not. The main reason I see right now is all too many guys think it is the thing to do because "the cool guys are doing it" Some say it is cheaper and then go out and spend 1500 on a kit to adapt it another 500 rebuilding it and another thousand putting air bag suspension on it. Some just think it is a quick and nasty way to get late running gear under their old trucks.

My factory frame was junk, no way at all to save it. I used an S-10 frame and have no regrets, my truck just turned 11,000 trouble free miles and rides like a Cadillac. After some quick math I have under a grand in my chassis including all the air ride components. It pays to search Craig's List several times a day, hit swap meets, and shop eBay. Deals are out there.

Oops....Just to add to what 48 Chevy said, yes, the stock frame is plenty able to handle a late model V-8.

Yes as long as it's not cracked anyplace it will be fine. The guy will be jealous too at how much easier you can build it if you get or have a complete truck/body

I'm using the stock frame under my '49. Its boxed but still runs stock front & rear suspension.
I installed a built 327, m21 4 speed and a 12 bolt rear axle with 3:73 gears about 40 years ago. It's held up well and it gets driven hard. Does it drive and handle like a new truck ? No way. But I do enjoy driving it. If I were to change the chassis & suspension I would probably go with a Jim Meyer or some other custom built system |

Thanks for all the input, I really appreciate it. I guess I will keep my stock frame and build off it then. I have a front clip and that is it for body parts at the moment. But this isn't going to be a rush build so I have time to search and find the parts I need. Thanks again for all the info.

I'm still building but I am using the stock frame in my LS powered 1950. I boxed the first 3rd of the frame, added a Fatman IFS, put in a TCI leaf kit, and have an 8.8 limited slip rear from an explorer. You can check out my build for ideas if you want. I'm still aways from the road though.

Stock frame with a camaro clip on the current truck. 383 about 435 hp no issues.
Building a 1953 suburban with stock frame,LS and mustang II. Takes some engineering but IMO as good or better than S10 |
