383 stroker

Okay Im in of some Help/Advice

I've decided I want to build a 383 stroker with 330 or so HP and roughly 410ft pounds.
I got a 350 bare block 4 bolt main that im going to use . I'm sure someone on here has done this. What I want to know is what crank ,heads ,and pistons recommended.? Any imput would be greatly appreciated. Is there a build sheet perhaps that I can use as a guide? It will be going in my 71 C-10 with 700r4 transmission. Thanx in advanve

Re: 383 stroker

Did mine last year but have lots more than 330hp. You can build your 350 for that fairly easy. Lots cheaper too.

X2

I built a 383 years ago and picked things together trying to save money. Take my advice and buy a complete matched already balanced rotating Assembly. scat builds good stuff. I believe speedway has some of the Best prices.

I built a budget 350 just over a year ago, nicknamed "The Buzzard". 350 4 bolt out of a 69 corvette. Stock rotating assembly with .030 over 5cc dome forged pistons and fat rings. 72 Chevelle heads, 487 casting number. Summit s/s 2.02 and 1.6 valves, good valve job. Heads were cleaned up, didnt even match port. We ball-parked compression around 9.4:1, only did clean up cuts on the heads and block. A Lunati bare-bones cam, 204/214 @ 50, .420/.440 lift on a 112 LSA. Stock valve springs, chromoly rocker arms, edelbrock performer intake, Holley 600 cfm low buck carb and dyno headers. It made 340 hp and 390 ft lbs of torque. I spent $1300 on that engine and it ran awesome on 92 octane.

I am currrently building a 383 with the same block. Build thread - http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...38#post6991338
I'm using Iron Dart Sportsman 200cc runner heads with a significant amount of porting and Manley 2.05 and 1.625 valves. My good friend, who is a professional engine builder, thinks that this build will make between 430 and 440 hp with close to 500 ft lbs of torque on pump gas. Now this particular build is meant for mild nitrous application (between 125-175 shot). You can make more power with something that's ALL motor. Different cam, compression, etc.

Re: 383 stroker

1thank you for all the replys . So from whats been said a person can get 330-350 HP out of a 350. I didn't realize that was possible? The main reason I was going for 383 was the HP. Sure tell im a rookie lol

Re: 383 stroker

A 350 should be able to get you to your goals. My 383 makes 492 HP and 500 ft lbs

Re: 383 stroker

People brag on hp, but drive torque- especially in a truck. The reason the 383 is so popular is because it adds more torque to the engine.

Re: 383 stroker

I bought my 383 kit through Northern Auto Parts. It's the 6.0 rod version of a 383. I got the cast steel Scat stroker crank, it came with 6.0 rods, but I opted for the better pro comp rods, flat top hypereutectic pistons, bearings, rings. it didn't come with gaskets, but it was a pretty good kit for $829* (base kit) then of course, you'll have to get your machine work done.I spent close to $700 getting all my machine work done,I had the machine shop balance everything and do the stroker clearancing. there are lots of 383 kits out there, it's mostly up to you and how hard you want to run it, or just cruise.decisions,decisions....good luck!

I have a crate 350, .030" over bore, cast iron vortec heads, flat top pistons, 9.6:1 compression, mild performance cam. It made 382 HP 402 ft-lbs on the engine dyno. Torque is over 320 ft-lbs from 2600 to redline.

Re: 383 stroker

Where the 383 really shines, is on tork....mine was basically 1 hp per cube. She pulled peak tork @ 3500 (435), but pulled over 400, from 2700-5200. Damn nice street mill, but after a 12.5 ride down the track in my little bros S-10, he is looking for more There is no substitute , for cubes....other than more cubes, turbo, blower, ect. Whizz on the NOS....run it on the motor! Longhorn

As others have said yes it can be done with a 350, but IMO you should consider what you want to do with it and the RPM range you want your power in.

In other words, a mild 383 will make that much torque in a lower RPM range than a more rowdy 350. Other considerations are gear ratio, exhaust (headers or not, pipe size) , towing capability, etc.

If you want that kind of HP and TQ with a 350, you will need headers and free flowing pipes.
