I picked up this hot mess last weekend ... and I have no idea where to start. I can't decide if I want to piece meal it a piece at a time while its still (barely) drivable or tear it down to the frame and work up. Right now it's a 72 250, 3 on the tree. In the end its going to be a lowered small block auto...with no holes.

What's the end goal for the truck?

I'd piece meal it and keep it drivable if I was doing that truck.

I'd get it fixed up and running and stopping good....then start driving it. Leave the paint as is.

It's got a really cool patina vibe to it. Fix the mechanicals and drive it!

Peice meal it, way too many people start the big dream tear down only to never get it back together, then take a loss and sell it. Start with mechanicle stuff first like brakes and go from there, get it fun to drive and enjoy it first to make sure its really in the cards for a total resto. There was a guy here just 2 days ago that just took some CLR and 0000 steel woll to his rust then he waxed it, it looked awesome.

I was actually looking at CLR/wet sanding it and waxing it. I did half of the inside of the tailgate and the result is pretty nice, but there are parts that go all the way to metal and deep scratches that still have a little rust in them, I wasn't sure if I could successfully wax over that. I'll have to find that post.

I cleaned half of the inside of the tailgate with CLR and some wet sanding as a test piece. The result looks pretty nice, but I think maybe I sanded too much. There is some bare metal coming through, and the low parts of the scratches still have a little rust in them. I'm not sure how to keep it looking like this? Just wax?

A nice clear coat application will work. Maybe some Rust Olieum or similar coat will keep it clean.
