New Rear Drive Shafts?

The Drive Shaft on my '68 C/10 Shortbed Stepside got bent in a collision last April. At freeway speeds, the vibrations are severe.
Subject is a 1968 C/10, 115'' WB/ 292 L6/ SM465/12-Bolt Corp rear 3.73. One piece shaft.
No local salvage yarts have any used ones in inventory. One Junker mentioned a '68 truck w/ a 327 and 4-speed coming in from Iowa. And that the shaft might run $400-500.

So is there a source for a new one-piece Prop Shaft for a short bed?

There has to be a drive shaft shop in the Tucson area that can build you a new one?

Thanks, Warren. I think they rebuilt a front shaft for me 25 years ago on my '67 K/10 Suburban.
Simmons 4x4 set up a rear differential back in the mid '80s on the '68 C/10 Stepside.
I'll call them both to get an estimate.

I was also looking at an Inland Empire custom driveshaft order form on Jeg's website. About $550 with a 3 week wait to build from my specs.

Re: New Rear Drive Shafts?

Precision did my GMC years ago. Super friendly and good turn around.

Yeah, just have one built to your specs. Not going to need anything special with the 292, just a clean precision build to match the truck.

Re: New Rear Drive Shafts?

Definitely just get something made local, another plus if you can take them the truck and let them do the measuring and re-use your trans yoke. No need for anything super fancy or over the top. Local trans builders, AG equipment, and heavy truck repairs shops are good sources to ask for drive shaft stuff, some even do them in house.

Going local is the best option. The Mail Order option could easily develop into an expensive screw-up. If I lived way out in the Boonies, it would be the only option.

Re: New Rear Drive Shafts?

I talked to Tim at Precision Driveshafts. He said he needs to see the shaft in person to get an estimate. It's been cold and rainy, and the spot under the truck in that carport space is wet, so I hafta wait for better conditions.

Re: New Rear Drive Shafts?

A few years ago I had a 2003 Silverado that had a bit of a vibration at highway speed. I took the driveshaft in to a shop in West Sacramento to have it balanced. They discovered that it was bent, and they were able to straighten it.

What did they charge you?

Re: New Rear Drive Shafts?

Somewhere in the ballpark of $200, if I remember correctly. It was seven years ago. They also replaced the stock non-serviceable u-joints with ones that had grease zerks.

Re: New Rear Drive Shafts?

Sac driveline does good work. Been using them for years on all my personal and customer builds. Even some custom chevy drive shafts in Toyotas
