oil filter question
My 68 K20 has the 327. When I first got it about a month ago I picked up an oil filter for it, they gave me the replaceable element. This is the only filter listed for it. When i got home, it had a spin on. I'm guessing the spin on filter was something a PO installed?

Re: oil filter question
1967 was the last year for element, 1968 was first year for spin-on, Please use a WIX 1060 filter, I bought a GM ZZ6 crate engine, took the GM filter off and took it apart, complete junk, Everytime I take a WIX apart I like to look at condition of the oil, a lot better built filter.

Re: oil filter question
Yes someone over the years has changed to an adapter for a spin-on filter for an easier oil change.
Do you see a number on the filter? There are different sizes you can buy. Hopefully the PO bought the one you can use a PF-25 or pf-35. PF-25 is for small blocks. I run Pf-35 on Small blocks for the little bit extra filter and oil capacity.

Re: oil filter question
Some of the filter adapters used the ford spin on...kinda rare.
Also....my 68 had to use the adapter for a spin on, 396 engine though |

Re: oil filter question
Wix p/n 51060. NAPA p/n is 1060. Same maker [Wix], but NAPA gets their label on the ones they sell.
My '68 C/10 came with the spin-on, disposable oil filter. I've had it since '73.

Re: oil filter question
Thank you all! Redneck and 68Orange, I used a WIX 51060. It had a Napa 1060. I checked online and a couple parts stores and they all listed the element for this year/engine. Thank you.

Re: oil filter question
I have two all original 68s, 1 with a 327, 1 with 396 both have the old canister style oil filters.

Re: oil filter question
Mine had an L6 292. I replaced that engine in 1977 and ran another rebuilt 292 for 250,000 miles. In 2005 I rebuilt the original engine, and it's in there now.

Re: oil filter question
Back in the day, a very popular replacement was made by Fram. They used their Ford part number PH8A filter, probably because the adapter has a smaller diameter than the O-ring that the canister mounted onto. The Chevy filter has the O-ring near the perimeter, but you don't put 2 O-rings together. That's asking for a leak.
The canister type filter was very efficient at cleaning the oil, but people didn't like the amount of labor required with taking it apart and cleaning it out. Another downside was picking that O-ring out of the block. If a piece gets left behind (and a really hard O-ring can be a blue steel ***** to get out in one piece), you are guaranteed a leak. Ask me how I know. Learned that when I was about 15.

Re: oil filter question
JC Whitney had an aftermarket attachment to use a regular roll of toilet paper as a filter medium inside a special oil filter unit. Supposedly the TP was superior at filtering than the usual Fram element, but I was never interested. Just too involved, and messy. I preferred the spin-on.

But if you muff the installation and the toilet paper plugs all your oil ports, the warranty on your new car is void. I've seen that happen, back in the '70s. Line mechanic in there picking toilet paper out of everywhere.

Re: oil filter question
My 69 CST/20 with a 350 had the element type filter when new. I installed a spin on adapter about 1972 that used the Ford PH8A filter. I probably bought it at J.C. Whitney.

Re: oil filter question
'67 in passenger cars and '69 in pickups were the last years for canister filter napa #1143 . #'s1060,1061=tall spin on and #1069=short version. Tall is listed for pickups and short for passenger car and header applications. Adapters have been available for longer than I can remember. And Frantz filters weren't wirth a crap.
