Re: ‘92 454 questions
the way I understand it, its a 454 bored 60 over with a stroker crank and rods that can use pump gas. For the money spent on something to drive every day, not something I would do. depends on your intended use

Re: ‘92 454 questions
what are you talking about? Is this a 454 equipped truck that you want to drop a 496 into, or do you have a 1992 454 that you want to rebuild into a 496?

Re: ‘92 454 questions
Seems everyone and their sister takes a sbc 350 and make it a 383. A 454 big block can be made a 496 by purchasing a scat rotating assembly either forged or cast depending how you plan on using it. Either bore block 030 for a 489 or go 060 for the 496 with the crankshaft having a longer stroke. You can use scat/eagle or others. I just mentioned scat because I have had success with forged rotating assemblies produced by scat

Re: ‘92 454 questions
That's most likely a Gen V block. They have specific requirements for head gaskets and no provision for a mechanical fuel pump. So, make sure you can get the head you want and it is compatible on a Gen V.
Make sure you aren't wanting to run a mechanical fuel pump as well. Personally, if I were building I would run a Mark IV 454 or find an L29 donor Vortec 7.4l.

Re: ‘92 454 questions
The heads are peanut port. Good for low end torque and nothing else. The intake runner is just to small.

Re: ‘92 454 questions
Peanut port heads still outflow most cheap aftermarket small block heads. They can be made to make decent power without much TOO much work.
Google "ported peanut port heads" and you will find enough to read for a week. But I'd start with an L29 which has the hydraulic roller and a pretty darn good set of large oval port heads. You should be able to score one for fairly cheap in a pull-ur-parts type yard.
