Rear end Question

I am parting out my 83 GMC 3+3 3500 dually. It's a crew cab long bed with a 454 and standard transmission. I need to know if the rear end of this truck is rare enough to warrant keeping rather than selling it to the scrap metal guy. Anyone know what the choices were are in this year and what I can look for to tell what it is?

Dan

Re: Rear end Question

on top of the axle tube on the right (pass) side there should be a series of numbers & letters stamped into it. take these to your local friendly chevy parts dude & he can tell you ratio, locker, etc. having said that it is most likely a gov lock and around my area a dually axle is not worth what a single wheel axle is, but i wouldn't scrap it. your next truck may need the gears outta it!

Re: Rear end Question

Count the number of bolts holding the cover on. Most likely you have a 14 bolt, which is a GM-built axle, but another possibility is a Dana, which would have 10 bolts.

You can count the ratio without taking off the cover.

Jack one rear wheel off the ground, put the transmission in neutral, and the parking brake off. Put matching marks on the pinion yoke and differential housing. Turn the wheel exactly TWO revolutions and count how many times the driveshaft turns, estimating any fractional turn as closely as possible. That number is your axle ratio.

If the wheel is difficult or impossible to turn, you may have posi. In that case, jack both rear wheels off the ground and turn either of them only ONE revolution. Count the driveshaft turns the same way as for an open rear.

Re: Rear end Question

Do a Google search in (EDIT images) for dana 60, GM 14 bolt, GM 10 bolt, ect and you will come up with a bunch of pictures you can use to ID the thing with.

Re: Rear end Question

A 1 ton should have a Dana 70. It will look much like a Dana 60 though. On the web to either the lower left or right of the cover there is the model designation cast into that web. That would be behind the sway bar in this pic. It will say either '60' or '70'

Re: Rear end Question

I'm sure glad theres knowledgeable people like you to help out around here I agree you gotta get the numbers off the axle and i don't know if the dana 70's are like the dana 44's but there should be a seried of numbers just to the right of the carrier on the axle tube too right as well? BOM number.

Heres an interesting read with a 1 ton showing a dana 70

Re: Rear end Question

OK here are photos of the numbers on the tabs. It's obviously a Dana 70 HD. What can you tell about the other numbers?

Thanks!

Re: Rear end Question

For more detailed info, you're going to have to find the build code on the axle tube, and decifer it on one of the sites swamp rat posted.
