Re: What is the correct box for a 1968 Stepside

It looks like a later bed verses a 67-72 bed but I could be wrong. Its not unusual for later year of beds to be installed on our trucks. That being said...I am sure others will follow up. As far as looks it looks nice to me

Re: What is the correct box for a 1968 Stepside

You could keep the bed and just get 67-72 fenders. I believe all other parts are the same... but those are 73-87 rear fenders.... probably early becasue of the side markers

Re: What is the correct box for a 1968 Stepside

If you notice the 67-72 rear fenders are rounded off like your front fenders, the 73+ fenders are more squared off around the wheel well openings.

No big deal, people do it all the time .. it's a good lookin truck either way ! I wouldn't worry about it too much.

Next time somebody says that, tell him "no the bed is correct, but the cab is an earlier model"! That should confuse him for a while.

Re: What is the correct box for a 1968 Stepside

Bed boxes are only different in the mount holes for the fenders and IIRC the tailgates. The bed you have is right but the fenders and steps are from a later truck.

Re: What is the correct box for a 1968 Stepside

Also it appears mine is mounted way high. I think the bed supports are in the wrong spot. The tall ones are in the middle. Oh well. The exhaust is done and that wasn't cheap. 1 3/4 Herman headers 3 inch collector to 3 inch dynomax ultra flows to a set of vbands and then to the stack.

Re: What is the correct box for a 1968 Stepside

The bedsides are different as well. As mentioned above you have a 73-87 stepside bed. The front of the bedside where the steps mount up are different than the 67-72 beds so you can't just swap fenders and steps. Member palfstep did a write up once about converting 73-87 bedsides for use on a 67-72 truck.

So yeah, the douchebags are right, but as long as you like it, it doesn't matter.

Here's a pic of my stepside for reference:

Re: What is the correct box for a 1968 Stepside

I'd just tell them don't worry about the front cause you won't see much of it anyway!

Seriously .. as long as you like it, don't sweat it.

Me(?) I'd lower it a little , .. but, just sayin. As long as you're happy, I say drive the wheels off of it.

Re: What is the correct box for a 1968 Stepside

Nice truck. I like the way the exhaust exits. Sorta like the Dod&e Little Red Express.

But,,, be nice to the douchbags. I had a guy trying to sell me a 68 "Chevy" truck with four headlights in front and got all indignant when I told him the front end was GMC. He said "It's a Chevy, I suppoe you know more than the original owner." I told him maybe not but I have an original 68 GMC and I know a GMC front end when I see one.
