Re: 1971 gmc 4x4 short bed, step side 4 speed
Not rare, but judging by the pics the sheet metal is rust free, it's clean over all, it is a SWB, so I would say it is desireable. Do you have a picture of the SPID? It does not look original, so anyone could have put it together in that configuration.

Re: 1971 gmc 4x4 short bed, step side 4 speed
I agree. That looks way nicer than what I started with and should be a great looking and driving truck when finished. Which from the looks of it should not take that much.
I guess it depends on where your from. Here in FL. Anything without a rust hole right through the side of it is a rare vehicle.

Re: 1971 gmc 4x4 short bed, step side 4 speed
Vin codes have been brought up many times and code sheets have been posted, just have to search them up. This took about 20 minutes.. Only thing the code dosn't say is if its a long bed or short bed but what you gave does say its a fenderside which translates to a stepside.
http://67-72chevytrucks.com/vboard/s...ight=Vin+codes 2 things you can do is verify the frame vin to the cab vin, then look under the bed at the frame to see if it was at one time a long bed that was shortened, look for frame splicing and a diamond shaped backing plate on the inside of the rails. Shortbeds weather 2 or 4wd are desirable, you have a sweet project, enjoy it.

Sweet looking truck. I would swap my 2wd SWB GMC for yours or one like it any day...

Unfortunately, GMC production records have been lost.

Re: 1971 gmc 4x4 short bed, step side 4 speed
Most gmc of this era do not have vin stamped into frame rail by the steering box

Get the Chevy stats on the same model and figure a good bit less.

Re: 1971 gmc 4x4 short bed, step side 4 speed
There were 1438 chevy's made in 71 as short step 4x4's. I would bet there were less than 500 GMC's built. That is assuming that your truck is a genuine short fenderside. I would put that in both the rare and desirable categories.

Re: 1971 gmc 4x4 short bed, step side 4 speed
The NP205 is a good thing too...
Being rare and desirable doesn't make it a 69 Z though so don't get too excited. Still, maybe better than my 72 K10 beater with nothing original... |

Re: 1971 gmc 4x4 short bed, step side 4 speed
More desirable to me than a '69 Z. . . .
