Hello All
My name is Jason and I'm looking for tips in what kind of heads to use on a every day driver 383 motor 30 over with a 268 cam.

If you are on a budget go vortec heads. This will require a different intake manifold specific to the heads. With vortec heads and that cam you should be around 385-400 horse depending on your compression ratio. The vortecs are 170cc intake runners and 67cc combustion chamber. 1.94 intake and 1.5 exhaust. if you want to spend a little more money go GM bowtie heads.

I have world product sportsman ll heads make around 430-440 horse street driven there a pretty penny though

I got some 882 heads here are the DETAILS

Heads are thoroughly cleaned and inspected

Pressure tested to ensure no cracks or leaks

3 ANGLE Valve job / Pocket Ported under valve seats

CBN milled to ensure straightness within .0015" and correct finish

All machine work performed on the latest state of the art equipment

Heads are assembled with new stainless 2.02 swirl polished intake valves

Heads are assembled with new stainless 1.60 swirl polished exhaust valves

Heads are machined with new hardened exhaust seats for unleaded fuel

Heads are assembled with hardened valve keepers

Heads are assembled with new .500 lift Z-28 valve springs

Heads are assembled with new valve seals

Heads are complete and ready to install

Heres my tip for building a 383, DONT. Its going to sound good but get 6 mpg if you're lucky. Put a cam in a 5.3 or 6.0, make same or more power with stock everything but the cam, and get 20 MPG at the same time. You can do the injected motor for the same price or cheaper than a 383 with good internals.

Man I didnt want to hear that!!!!! Block is almost done and heads will be here monday. Right now the truck has a 350 with 305 heads on it. I baby the crap out of it. Some days it knocks more then otheres and I have a hard time pulling a trailer are camper. I was told a 383 is the way to go if I want the pulling power..

Thanks for the tips guys, But think I will do a little better then 6 mpg with a 4 speed transmission.

I put a 700R4 transmission the my truck and people are telling me if the tv cable isn't set right i will burn up the transmission. Can anyone tell me how can I tell if its not set right.

6mpg? man what did you have? My 383 stroker was getting 13 to 17mpg and it was never tuned 100% i know others that was getting over 21mpg

383+700r4+3.73= 15mpg average more if i'd keep my foot out of it lol

but i will agree a LS is cheaper these days and more power when I built mine back about 4 years ago it was to costly now its much cheaper

What size Carburetor are you running with that set up?

mine is Fuel injected but I know a couple guys that ran 750's carbs and one ran a 650

my holley 750 double pumper, double feed, 4 corner idle is running rich at idle. i went from a 6.5 PV to a 3.5 PV to a plug and it has 71 jets for the primary's. and the floats are set right. Can anybody help. Please

Need more specifics on your engine. I had a 383 in a '76 K20 with a 6" lift and 35's w/ 4.10 gears. I got 11mpg. I had WP Sportsman II's, dished KB hyperutectic pistons and a Comp X-treme 4x4 cam. th thing would light up the 35's and like I said I got 11mpg.....with a crappy edelbrock 600cfm carb. I think your 750dp is too much.

it a 383 with a 292 cam the head details are on the fourth post from the top. this is in a 82 chevy C 10 with I think 308's gears. I had a holley 600 on it and it was rich to with a 3.5 PV in it. The 750 is a little better with the pv plug but I still smell it when im backing up. and have only put like 4 miles on it...And it is the same spark plugs.

What compression, which 292 cam? What is your timing set at? What plugs?

I don't know what cam. I know the duration on the cam is 234 degrees and its from Jeg. The timing is set at 12 degrees and the plugs AC Delco R45TS gaped at 30. Just found the cam on Jeg site http://www.jegs.com/i/JEGS+Performan...00006/10002/-1

at wide open throttle (WOT) the tv cable should be pulled tight

Ok need some help for a good carb that wont run so rich. I have a 383 40 over with a 292 cam, air gap intake, with 1975 882 cast iron heads port and polished 2.02 intake and 1.60 exhaust. And a 700R4 transmission. In a 82 chevy truck long wheel base.

750dp may be a little too much carb but running rich at idle is not a PV problem. The PV has no effect on idle mix. Its all in the idle circuit.

What vacuum do you have at idle? How is transition from idle to cruise? There are a number of ways to adjust your idle mix but they have to be done in the right order. You can find many other articles on the subject too.

You may be better off with a Holley street carb in the 650cfm range with vac secondaries. An Edelbrock in the same range would be an ok choice too. The dp's tend to work best for lighter cars, higher gears (low #) and more radical cams or some combination of those. They are not known for their economy though (i.e. rich).

Let me know if you ever want to sell the 750, btw.
