1pc rear main small block oil pan gaskets
I put two new fel pro oil pan gaskets on my 98 in the truck. Both leaked. Got fed up, pulled entire engine to re-seal everything with full felpro kit. Followed the directions PERFECTLY [which happen to match the oem GM manual] with the engine upside down on the engine stand for ease and perfection. Also have new rear main seal, new timing cover....
Anyways finished up, let sit overnight. Next day I put everything together besides the intake, and prelube the motor. Let sit overnight again. Came out to oil leaking on the floor. Its going past the gasket at the timing cover, literally in the middle of what you'd call the front main seal I guess[the arched part where cover meets the pan]. This is beyond frustrating, to the point I ordered a new oil pan and a mahle gasket this time because I can't for the life of me figure out what else could be causing this? Any pointers or things not normally mentioned in instructions?

Re: 1pc rear main small block oil pan gaskets
I had a similar problem with a pan on my 396.
The arched part was squeezed slightly in one spot and it would always leak right there. I put a small flashlight in the pan and put the pan on dry so I could see exactly where I needed to massage the pan. Used a big piece of pipe (3 inch) and big hammer and after several tries got it perfect. Wacka, Wacka! Might be the same problem with yours. Test fit the new pan with a flashlight too. Mine was an old pan. |

There are two different pan gasket seal area thicknesses and I suspect this is your
issue....the area is where the timing cover half moon seals onto the pan. see details on this link https://www.speedwaymotors.com/the-t...ferences/28651

Re: 1pc rear main small block oil pan gaskets
Like Aussie, there are two different sizes for the arch, depending on your oil pan. Additionally, I’ve found that although Felpro says not to use any sealant, I used some around the timing cover and hadn’t had a problem since.

Re: 1pc rear main small block oil pan gaskets
New pan+gasket= no drips finally.
I will say this, the felpro gasket was a cardboard core with rubber overlay, the Mahle was a metal core. Mahle wins this match.
