283 Carb & Intake on a 350: how well is it going to run?

If I were to put the carb and intake off a 283 & used it on a 350 how well do you think it will run? I know it would make more power if I went to a 4bbl intake & carb but I'm more worried about drivability or any other issues. Anyone actually done this? How did it work out for you if you did?
The reason I ask is I blew up the 283 in my truck & I'm thinking about a rebuilt engine & of course a 350 with all the covers on it is cheaper than a 283 with no covers. So I already have the 283 intake and carb whereas I would have to buy a manifold & carb if I went 4bbl. I know they made plenty of 350 with 2bbl but I don't know how the jetting for those compares to what came on the 283.
Any opinions?

You could make it run alright. You could probably come up with a stock 4bbl intake fairly easily and cheaply. Those don't seem to sell well. I believe a proper 4bbl on a 350 will not only give more power, but also yield better mileage when running on the primaries compared to all the 2bbl all the time

Well I do have a stock 4 bbl intake, but it's on a different engine. It also doesn't have a bolt hole for the 67 alternator adjustment bracket. I realize I could use later style brackets but then that's just more stuff I have to source & I would still need a carburetor that I don't have.

I've kinda got myself in a pickle here. I went from 3 drivable vehicles a few months ago to none. I'm having to drive one of the wife's trucks to get to work

Re: 283 Carb & Intake on a 350: how well is it going to run?

It would be worth a set of gaskets to try it.
I think it would run okay.
Most of the 350's had the bigger base 2 barrell on them.
It's worth a shot.

Most of the swap meets will be open this year,
If you have any in your area.

Then you my find another option.

Bolt the 283 intake and carb on. You might be surprised that it works well.
I used one for my phoney tri-power set up on a 350 once.

You'll get better gas mileage with a 4 barrel.

It should work just fine as a daily driver type setup given your current circumstances. Something that works NOW is often better then something that may work better some time and additional money in the future.

Add a new air breather to the cost of a 4 bbl setup. Also possible throttle linkage issues.

A SBC is an SBC. The intake should fit and run fine. It wont be a powerhouse but should get you around and that 350 will be a better base to get performance out of down the road.

Re: 283 Carb & Intake on a 350: how well is it going to run?

Food for thought:
A stock 350 at 100% efficiency at 5000 RPM can only process 500 CFM 85% is the norm figured.
Carb CFM = CID x RPM/3456 x VE
350 x 5000/3456 x .85 = 430

I would think you would have no problem running your old intake and carb to expect at least the same or better performance you got from the 283 until you can upgrade down the road.
It won't be a hotrod but it will get you from point A to point B

They used put two barrels on the big block 396 so it shouldn't be to bad.

Re: 283 Carb & Intake on a 350: how well is it going to run?

If you are just looking to get your daily driver working again then put your intake and 2bbl on the 350. If you have some time and money get a aluminum intake and get a 4bbl q-jet. You will save about 40-50 pounds in switching intakes from cast iron to aluminum plus the q-jet 4bbl runs on the two small primaries the majority of the time until you jump on it and open those big secondaries.

Re: 283 Carb & Intake on a 350: how well is it going to run?

I had this set up on my truck for about 2 years, 2 bbl rochester on a cast iron intake. Ran fine. Rochester 2bbl Carb is 500 cfm. Quality low pressure fuel pump is important, somewhere between 8-12 psi.

Re: 283 Carb & Intake on a 350: how well is it going to run?

I have a built 400sb running a 390cfm 4 barrel. Its down on power but still runs good. Give it a try. On a stock motor you probably won't notice much difference except at higher RPMs. Off idle torque may even be better with the slightly smaller intake and smaller carb venturies.

Re: 283 Carb & Intake on a 350: how well is it going to run?

The craziest thing you may have to do down the road is to open up the jets a few thousands to give it a little more umph at a higher rpm. Other than that, It'll run fine

Re: 283 Carb & Intake on a 350: how well is it going to run?

Well it might all be a moot point anyway. The auto parts store hasn't even been able to get a response from the rebuilder about lead time on either engine.
I guess at this point I might as well start tearing down small blocks & see if I can make one running engine out of three or something.
