70 GMC 396/4 speed to 396/TH350

New posting here, but not to turning a wrench.

I have a 70 GMC with a 396/4 speed & I need to change it over to a 396/TH350. My left foot will not handle a manual clutch anymore. The donner for this swap will be a 78 P10 Van (complete rig) with a 292 (cracked block) & the original TH350. After about 12 hours of searching this site I have not found the information I was looking for so here goes the questions.
1. What cross member/s do I need to add or remove & from what rig do I obtain the ones I need from?
2.Will the flex plate & torque converter from the 292 work on the 396?
3. Will the steering column & shift linkage from an early K5 work for the shifting duties?
I know that the drive shaft will probably need to be shortened, that I need cooling lines & cooler, but that is minor stuff I will come across. The big question is how do I mate the 292's TH350 to the 396 with out breaking the bank.

A big thanks to all for your help

Re: 70 GMC 396/4 speed to 396/TH350

First of all, Welcome to the board!!
(1) You will need to remove the "under the belhousing" crossmember which is riveted in, then for the T350 you will need a factory 67-72 Automatic crossmember, or an aftermarket one designed for the 67-72 trucks,
(2) Yes, the Flex plate, converter and starter will all work on the 396
(3)The steering column from a 69-72 K5 will work, the linkage between the K5 (4X4) and a standard BB 67-72 2WD is a bit different but can be made to work (the 4X4 linkage rod is shorter than a standard 2WD. you will need to drill a couple of holes and make the rod longer, the easiest linkage solution is: either locate a factory big block linkage setup, Or use an aftermarket one like this: http://www.lokar.com/product-pgs/col...shiftlink.html

What are you going to do with the rest of the P10?

Thanks for the info Livrat:

The rest of the P10 is going to be my next project, a 4 x 4 P10 for overnight fishing stays in the hills around here.

Thanks Again for the help
