Well one where is the rocker and nut second you need to figure why the push rod bent bad cam stuck valve and so on smack the valve a few times with a hammer see if it moves if it moves and returns freely you can try a new push rod and rocker about 10 dollars but you could still have a bad cam or rocker stud pulling loose from head

could be a bent valve, not cheap or quick. Do what truckdude said and smack the valve spring with a hammer lightly, the spring height should be the same as the rest after, if not, then it is a bent valve (AND bent push rod). If you don't understand any of this I would recommend getting a friend who might, to take a look.

Re: This 42 n-experienced mech needs help
Tapping on the valve may help you determine if it's stuck but if it's something bent further up the valve stem then the best tool to check valve to see if it's binding is one like I use. Put the nut on the threaded stud and press it down. If you don't have one use something for leverage like a pry bar or long screwdriver. Maybe with a washer under the nut.
If valve moves freely with no binds, replace the rod or maybe even straighten it out to check the engine out. A backfire because of timing problem can also cause this to happen so be sure and check the timing and adjust the lifter correctly.

Still curious about where the rocker and nut was and what kind of shape they were in.
