Hi people of the smaller trucks my current truck is a 86 c30 with a 454. Im looking for a smaller truck i can dd until i can afford a duramax or cummins anyway im looking for 4 cyl 5 speeds. Can anyone give me info on these s10's? My dad has owned a 01 s10 with a v6 and auto and my sister has a crewcab v6. just want some thought's on the 4 bangers.

my 99 2.2/auto had a BAD knock, bearings gone, got a small block now

I have a 00 that i bought very used and it is ok for a small truck. its got 138K on it and it eats oil and i think there is a coolant leak at the head. Its peppy enough for me but i dont drag race anymore.
Its comfortable enough for my fat rump and it gets great mileage

a couple issues with the 2.2s

timing chain guides/tensioner wear out and rattle. left unattended it will lock up the engine.

head gaskets go bad at the LR corner due to bolt breaking/stretching. also the EGR plate at back of head can leak. this is a real PITA even if you have a truck drivers dictionary.

if the coolant is flushed regularly these 2 things are moot.

pass on the 2.2/automatic. you will waste gas and time trying to get into traffic. these were made for a 5 speed.

its funny you say this as im smelling coolant on mine...what is the fix it the bolt stretches or breaks? I have no luck and figure im gonna wind up with this problem

IIRC we get about $650 to do these.
look for a trail from the driver's side rear corner of head gasket.
if I was you I would rather have a bad heater core than a head gasket leak. but then again they both come out to about the same money.

its prolly the head... you only smell it outside the truck very rarely inside. ill see if i see anything if and when the snow/rain stops.. what do they do retap the hole?

the bolt gets rusted and either stretches or breaks above the deck. I use a stud puller to get them out.
