700r4 help

can i drive my 700r4 without the mechanical speedometer gear in the tranny, or is this bad for it. i plan on putting one in, but i dont have it right now and wanted to take the truck for a test drive first.

Put something into the hole to seal it then or it will puke fluid all over the place.
