Need a wheel/tire recommendation

Guys, I'm just starting a little 67 drag truck project and could use a wheel and tire recommendation. The truck will be strip only and all the weight possible cut out. A 496 13-1 small solid cam motor and TH400 w/4500 stall converter will power it. The rear is a stock width 12 bolt and it will have fleet bed sides with no floor and tubs added. I was thinking about a 10" wheel but don't know what backspacing to get or if a 12" would fit inside the fenders. Does a 30x10.5 tire sound about right? thanks, bighead

That tire sounds about right. I think (don't take this as the gospel) a ten inch wheel with 5 inches of back spacing will work. You might check out the centerline telstars. They look pretty sweet for the price. I had them on my old 71 truck.

Re: Need a wheel/tire recommendation

If it's tubbed you can run a 10" with 5 or even 5.5" backspacing, or a 12" with 7.5" backspace, both available in a Weld Draglite, they also make a 15x5 and 15x6" front rim to match in a 5x5 bolt pattern. That's what I have run on my 71 before with 29x14.5" tire, the 67 rear is a bit narrower but you'll still have lots of room.

Re: Need a wheel/tire recommendation

Thanks 71. Jeg's had some Draglite 12's with blems for $176 so they are on their way to my house. What front runner tire would you suggest for the 5" fronts? bighead

Re: Need a wheel/tire recommendation

In a bias ply or a radial? I use M/T's 28x7.5" Sportsmans with a 31x16.5" back tire. What brand and size are the blems on then back, I would try to match them.

Re: Need a wheel/tire recommendation

Sorry I wasn't clear. The wheels are blems at a discouted price. I'm going to use Hoosier's around a 30x10.5 or 11.5. I was just wondering what size frontrunner is right for a 5" Draglite on on of these trucks. Thanks for your help. bighead

Re: Need a wheel/tire recommendation

I'd go with the M/T fronts in a 28 tall. I don't recall Hoosier making a front that tall for a 5" rim, I ran Hoosiers before and had to go with Mickey fronts.

Do you ever run any .4 pro tree stuff? What kind of lights do have with a tire that tall?

Re: Need a wheel/tire recommendation

We run a sportsman tree, so not sure, they messure 28" on a 4" rim I run them on a 6" so they're a bit shorter then that. I've always ran a taller tire so I'm use to them, I had 26" once (ended up closer to 25") put them on thought they looked way too small and took them off and returned them.

How wide are your front rims? I wondered about those but my rims are 6", but I might go to a 5" some day and a true drag front.

I'm on the look-out for a pair of 5" wide Weld wheels .... saw a nice pair of Drag Stars at a swap meet last Saturday. The seller also had a pair of rear wheels/slicks and wanted to sell all 4 as a set.

He would NOT separate them even when I waved the money at him.: > (

At one time I had considered using Centerline wheels which come in a light weight version that are only 3.5" wide.

Still looking .... another swap meet 1st weekend of August.

Re: Need a wheel/tire recommendation

My wheels are 3.5's . I have the 4.75 bolt pattern . I have Strange brakes now but when I put the truck back together 9 years ago I didn't want to be stuck with the wider wheels so I had a machine shop drill my stock stuff for that bolt pattern . You can do it just like the multi pattern wheels . Just drill them inbetween the old holes .

Re: Need a wheel/tire recommendation

Ya was thinking of doing that if ever need be, I ordered my axles drilled with 2 patterns incase I ever need to buy new rims and can't find what I want in a 5x5 pattern. Do you have any pics of the 3.5's so i can see how it looks that narrow?

It is a LOT harder to find deals on wheels with a 5 x 5" so having the BOTH patterns is a good thing well worth the money to get the drilling done.

I have been looking since last Summer for a GOOD deal on a pair of "narrow" Weld wheels for the front of our C10.... no luck so far.

Re: Need a wheel/tire recommendation

they don't make them in 5x5 when I was looking, thats why I got the AR 6'' on the front and 10'' on the back, but I still don't understand the 12'' rim with a 10.5 tire Bighead most don't recomend a smaller tire on a wider rim
