Post looking smaller rear drums

on my 72 LWB i have drum brakes, a disc conversion would be nice but cant afford it. I ned to find smaller drums that dont have the cooling fins. Somebody on here said they had there's machined off but is there a 12 bolt car axle brake assembly that would bolt up? I know the drums are not the same width on the cars as the trucks. need to get it done to get my cragars to fit.

i wanna do this b/c i spent $400 on rear rims that dont fit that i am stuck with b/c they were special ordered. It is what the manufacturer suggested i should do. I well never be doing any hauling with the truck i see no need for extra cooling for the brakes

howcome they dont fit ? the fins are not there just for hwen you haul weigh tin truck, they are there to cool off the brakes no matter how you use the truck, for the most part, if you use the truck in actual city traffic stop and go, then you will wish you had fins on them,.

It was suggested by 2 different wheel manufacters to machine the fins on large backspaces on the wheels. The ralleys I am setting up have a 6 1/2" bs,& will clear the drums. I did also find that the replacment drums have a little less fin height than the stockers had(got lucky,no machine work). How much bs do the wheels have,& how far away from fitting are they?

the wheels have 8'' bkspg abd are about 1.5 to 2'' from bolting up. same w/ my front rims, they dont clear the caliper, i have to get a 1'' spacer to make them fit which will mess up my offsetting, but i have no choice.

Can earlier drums from a 67-68 be redrilled? I know they don't have the fins.

Take them to any place that turns drums and talk them into turning the fins off. If they have one of those cheapie machines that won't do it carry it to a machine shop,they should not charge more than one hour to do it. If you can find someone that works in a machine shop you should be able to get it done for a 12 pack

Do you know the specs on those? My drums are 11x2'' every car drum ive been able to find has been either 11x3.25 or 4. and the only way at Napa to tell if the drums dont have fins is to look at every one. The Napa i have near me is the main distribution for the southeast so that is about impossible.

I would look at selling, are trading the wheels in on a set that fit, before I went and had the drums worked on, but if you have to keep them I would grind them off myself. It's a brake drum it's not going to hurt it no more than it will be after your done. If the fins are solid would be my only concern. The time would might not be worth it though.A shop might save you a lot of time.

After talking to tech support at Air Lift I have found out that the kit I need is 60811. Per the measurements I gave them. Ride height of truck inside spring and inside diameter of springs.

i would love to trade them or sell em but they are too weird of application 15x12 Cragar SS w/ 8'' backspacing and Cragar only makes their 16'' rim 9'' wide.

You might try an aftermarket drum first,but I think 8" is pushin it on bs. I thought I was gonna have to machine the fins on a 6 1/2" bs(15" wheel,with largebore center....13 1/4 on the center). I went to Napa,& picked up a new set of drums to have machined(no point in spending cash on old drums that cant be turned again). As I said, I got lucky.....the replacemenr drums didnt have as large a fin area,& the wheels will fit,without machining....@ 6 1/2"bs. From what I saw when setting mine up,I dont think you will have to shave all the fin off,the most offensive area will be toward the back edge of the drum.......& I wouldnt loose any sleep over machining them if needed. I would check out Napa first,& measure a replacment drum vs the OE.........they were only $34.50 ea to replace. I also got a couple new pcs on my old truck at the same time.......& that always makes me happy! Good luck........69longhorn
