fuel senders for dummies?

I searched and read many posts about testing senders and gauges and i think i am just simple. Even this site sorta helped http://www.6066gmcguy.org/Electrical-02.htm
The problem is that when my truck is in the run position the needle goes directly to E as in pic:
Then when I remove the wire from the sender i goes to 9 o'clock:

While key was on, i tried grounding from post to flange with no movement of the needle. I have a 69 I6 250 manual trans. here is the new sender.
Any help for the simpleton would be great. I currently have a full tank of gas in thse pics. Thanks

Well the position of your gauge needle is dependent on the resistance to ground of the sending unit. The unit resistance is 0-90 ohms where zero will give you an empty reading on the gauge and 90 gives you a full reading.

your first picture is an indication of zero ohms between the sender and the gauge and the second picture indicates the highest ohms reading possible because of no connection between the gauge and the sender when you pulled the sending unit wire off. You have different clocks than I do because I read that as three o"clock LOL.

If you ground the sending unit wire to the flange the gauge should go to empty. If it does and it goes to empty with with the wire connected it means the sending unit is grounded internally. I would take the sending unit out and with the wire attached to the center terminal and the key on, ground the flange and move the float arm up and down and check the gauge for movement. It should read between full and empty if it's good. If it reads empty all the time then the float resistor is no good.
