Anyone converted to a large rear window?

I have seen that at least one person here has converted using a panel from an original truck. But, listed in some of the catalogs is a rear cab panel that replaces the entire rear of the cab. It comes in small or large rear window style and the inner panel for the conversion is also available. Just wondering, has anyone here used one of those to convert to a large rear window?
If so, how difficult was it and how did it fit? Any pictures along the way? Any advice (other than don't try it at home, LOL)

I think that there was an article in one of the truck magazines a while back but don't remember which one. The replacement inner panel would probably make things a lot easier though.

A friend of mine did one (He is a master welder and fabrication guy). He said it flexed to much and the doors never closed or stay closed like they should.

Here's a link to the article. I personally think the big back window is overrated And I like the look of the smaller window, but only on the 55-59. Of all the mods I'm doing on mine I'm leaving the rear window alone.

Re: Anyone converted to a large rear window?

Interesting article. It must have been done before the full rear cab panels were available as the article mentions that there were no conversion panels available for a Chevy like there is for a Ford. I would like to have the large rear window but I think that will be on the "back burner" for a while.

I actually cut out the rear section from a big window cab and disected it and I tell you Im an experianced bodyman and it was alot of work. but if you know what you want, dont be afraid to go for it. you could and should brace the cab as much as possible. if you have the cab bolted to the frame and the door gaps are set, just brace everything well with some scrap steel and dont be afraid to cut! its only metal. mind over metal!! check out my build picts and you can see how I did this conversion without a new panel. good luck! and never weld anything solid until everything fits the way you want it to and be careful not to get to much weld going in one spot. these old cabs maybe heavy steel, but they still like to pull around when welding them. measure, measure, measure.

Re: Anyone converted to a large rear window?

Yukon Ratrod's build thread shows how he did it but as he said it wouldn't be an easy project at any rate.

I've seen a couple of articles or threads where they changed the whole rear panel and I have seen at least one where they cut the opening and sheet metal out of a doner and replaced it that way.

From what I saw in his thread the best way might be to haul the truck and a #46 paper grocery sack full of cash to Whitehorse and ask politely. That is if you want it perfect when it is done.
